![]() ![]() I had the impression at the time that only Apple Store SSDs would have worked with the MBPs and anything else was broken without 3rd party support and Yosemite wasn't supporting the 3rd Party SSDs due to kext signing. It's nice that TRIM is supported again, but during the time TRIM wasn't supported, it wasn't even near being the End of the World.Īpologies for that. There are no immediately noticeable symptoms of TRIM not being enabled, and some SSDs don't even need it. The only thing that broke was TRIM support, and that was hardly a disaster. That's a bit of an extreme alarmist statement."completely broke support" ? I do remember that disassembly was a PITA. I had forgotten the specs and I don't have the MBP anymore. For once HDDs were hard to find in PATA form by 2008 and 66 MB/s was slower than the best 2.5" HDDs. It was the switch from PATA 100 (running at 66 MB/s) to SATA II in late 2008 that made the use of the optical bay practical. late 2011 through mid 2012: SATA III & SATA III.early 2011: SATA III & SATA II (or III).late 2008 through mid 2010: SATA II & SATA II.Here are connection types of the two bays (HDD/optical drive): I had considered the idea until I heard that the DVD at one point was on SATA I and the hard disk was on SATA II. I think modern SSDs have their own built in methods of keeping themselves healthy and do not rely on TRIM as earlier ones used to. I've looked at the Samsungs but haven't bought any. I've looked into this and did not find a way to do this. Is there a way to enable trim on an external (samsung 1 TB) drive? El Capitan 10.11.0: Enable Trim safely using Disk Sensei!.Yosemite 10.10.3-10.10.5: Enable Trim safely using Disk Sensei!.Yosemite 10.10.0 – 10.10.2: Not supported (kext signing issues).Mavericks 10.9.0 – 10.9.5: No issues, use Disk Sensei.Mountain Lion 10.8.0 – 10.8.5: No issues, use Trim Enabler 3.Snow Leopard 10.6.8: No issues, use Trim Enabler 2.2.You should be OK if you're on El Capitan. In your opinion, is it worthwhile to dump that much money into this dinosaur?Īnother concern is that Yosemite completely broke support for 3rd party SSDs, at least for the earlier versions. I'm eyeballing an OWC 1TB SSD upgrade for $450. The battery is at 88% of its original capacity, but it's otherwise good as new. I have a first-gen 15" Retina MacBook Pro from 2012 (i7, 8GB, 512GB SSD). This thread has helped reassure me of that. But this laptop is too good for that kind of treatment. I'm usually of the mind that I need to stay in a frequent upgrade cycle to avoid losing too much value in the iterations. If anybody has found another brand that will work, I'd certainly appreciate a link so I can compare it to what OWC offers. It appears to be unique to the 15" MBPs from this time period. The SSD in this MBP is not a typical 2.5" laptop drive size/shape. I have searched somewhat extensively, but it appears that OWC is the only company offering an upgrade for this model. Regarding the SSD: Several people have recommended upgrading the current SSD with a certain brand. I don't think I'll need a new battery for at least another year, but it's good to know I can get one when the time comes. I did not realize that it could be replaced fairly easily and inexpensively. I think my main concern has been the battery. It really is a great machine even compared to the current models, which offer (to my knowledge) a relatively minor performance boost over this laptop-certainly not enough to justify the purchase price. Basic specs:ĭual display cards - Intel HD Graphics 4000/NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB To clarify about my particular machine, it's the first MacBook Pro to have a retina display. I appreciate all of your different points of view.

Why we like it: This relatively expensive scanning unit is capable and simple to use directly out of the box, but is also capable of more advanced technical listening. Best Overall Police Scanner: Uniden BCD536HP HomePatrol Higher-end models typically have proprietary software that allows users to customize and access information and data, although less advanced models lack this functionality entirely. With small and difficult-to-read screens and buttons, a scanner’s full potential can only be unlocked when plugged into a personal computer. Without easy programming functions, it will be difficult to listen to the frequencies most interesting or relevant to you. Programming allows you to identify exactly which frequencies you’d like to monitor, whether that be airport, police, or fire department chatter. A good police scanner has an accurate and simple-to-use scanning function that is easy to program. Scanners are better than conventional radios because of their ability to cycle through, or ‘scan’ through different frequencies and stop when the unit picks up radio chatter or activity. To see if your local public safety personnel uses trunking technology, check for a curated list of all of the channels in your area. If the organizations you listen to use trunking-equipped radios, you’ll have to buy a scanner that is able to listen to those same frequencies. By doing this unpredictably, they make it difficult to listen to transmissions. Many governmental agencies that use two-way radio to communicate utilize a technology called trunking, where the radios rapidly switch between frequencies during broadcasts. Due to the fact that desktop scanners usually stay in the same place, devices meant for home use usually don’t have this feature. Typically only available on handheld models, GPS-equipped police scanners can automatically tune into local frequencies as you physically move between different municipalities. If the scanner has one of these unique mounting mechanisms, it will typically also have a flat bottom and installed speaker to function on any flat surface. Some scanners also have different mounting options, notably brackets for hanging the device on a wall or slots to insert a scanner in your car stereo. For home use and keeping your family updated during emergencies, pick up a desktop scanner. If you want something to use while driving or traveling, a portable scanner is best. Portable scanners are handheld and look similar to a walkie talkie, but they have limited battery life and require recharging. Desktop scanners are larger and plug into the wall they typically have more features and better antennas. Listeners on scanners nationally and internationally can also key into private events like sports and conferences using public frequency radios. Listeners follow emergency personnel frequencies in all situations, at home, while driving, or even while out and about. In recent years the pastime of listening to public band radio has blossomed into a hobby with its own vibrant online community. However, police scanning is not only for staying updated on local emergencies and events. Scanners come in all forms, from handheld to desktop, but they all have the same purpose: to keep you and your family safe and informed with regards to the activity of area emergency personnel. Active and aware community members want to follow along with local updates as they happen-and there’s no better way to follow the movements of public safety personnel than with a police scanner. ![]() A breakfast go-to since opening in 1996, Fido starts serving at 7 a.m. 01 of 26 Avocado and Poached Egg Toast Leah Maroney Avocado toast is in the house! And that’s why we like Beatrix - it’s versatile. Overall, Beatrix is a good piece to an otherwise sceney River North food scene - there’s not much in terms of middle-of-the-road meals on the spectrum of fancy to take out. It's still a fashionable River North crowd here, but all things considered, it’s low-key. We won’t go so far as to say everything on the menu is health-conscious, but Beatrix can definitely cater to the type of meal that will keep you on your toes.īrunch is a big hit, but we actually prefer Beatrix for lunch or a casual dinner out. Further enhancing the spring time vibes is the menu, which has an array of juices, tasty salads, and substantial fish and meat entrees that manage to not feel gluttonous either. The large panel windows and industrial chic feel make it relaxing in a permanent spring time vibes kind of a way. Unlike a MINI Cooper, Beatrix feels very roomy, light, airy, and not as pretentious as you would expect a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant in a hotel lobby to be. It made absolutely zero sense, and I did not walk away thinking man, gotta get me one of those. I once walked by and MINI Cooper was doing a drive-in movie night to promote how “spacious” their cars were. Most common objects were awls, needles, projectile points, scrarpers, burnishers, punches, hammers, but also some specific tool types occurred, such as Early/Middle Neolithic spatulas-spoons, and some types of decorative objects.
